October: Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Each year, communities across the country come together to honor survivors and remember those lost to domestic violence

On September 4, 2024, the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV) conducted its 19th Annual Domestic Violence Counts 24-hour Survey, which reported that during that 24-hour period:

Across the Nation
  • 79,088 victims received services nationwide
  • 26,109 hotline contacts were made
In California
  • 5,413 victims were served
  • 1,758 hotline calls were received — an average of over 73 every hour
PREVAIL’s Local Impact
  • 1,167 survivors served
  • 1,782 crisis line calls received
  • 528 temporary restraining orders petitioned
  • 407 clients housed in domestic violence shelters

Break the Silence, Take a Stand!

The Silent Witness

Since 1994, PREVAIL has been keeping record of women, children, and men who have been murdered in acts of domestic violence in San Joaquin County. Our wooden silhouettes represent those individuals who lost their lives. This year, some of them will be on display at various locations throughout the County. Follow us on social media to learn more about display locations and help us honor their memory. Special thanks to the authorities and partners who continue to support this campaign — you are making a difference!
