Indirect service volunteers support PREVAIL from behind the scenes, with no educational requirement and training provided entirely on the job. This covers work like sorting and organizing the PREVAIL Clothing Closet, helping run special events (Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Denim Day, Night of Remembrance, the Annual Luncheon, Christmas in July), and community engagement like tabling at outreach events, health and resource fairs, and community presentations.

What the 69-Hour VAT Training Actually Covers

Victim Assistance Training, or VAT, is a state-certified, 69-hour training for staff and volunteers, built to prepare people to understand and respond to domestic violence, sexual assault, and youth homelessness. It's not an orientation you sit through once. It's the credential that clears a direct service volunteer to actually support participants.

Think of VAT as the difference between knowing a topic exists and knowing how to act on it in the moment. Completing VAT means you understand what survivors are actually navigating, not just in theory, but in the specific ways it shows up in a crisis call, a hospital room, or a courtroom hallway.

Direct service volunteers don't stop at VAT, either. PREVAIL also requires mandated reporter training, sexual harassment training, and 40 hours of mentoring and job shadowing alongside direct service staff before a volunteer works independently. Services span English, Spanish, and several other languages, and PREVAIL specifically encourages system-impacted individuals, BIPOC, men, and bilingual applicants, given the diversity of the community it serves.

Indirect Service: Real Volunteer Work That Doesn't Require Direct Client Contact

Not ready for VAT and direct client work? Indirect service is a genuine way to help, not a consolation option. Clothing Closet volunteers keep PREVAIL's donated-goods system running: sizing, organizing, and processing incoming donations so shelter clients can access what they need quickly. Special events volunteers help set up, break down, and coordinate PREVAIL's recurring community events throughout the year. Community engagement volunteers represent PREVAIL at tabling events, resource fairs, and public presentations, often the first contact someone has with PREVAIL before they ever need its services.

Indirect service volunteers still go through a routine background check, but the training is on the job. There's no 69-hour requirement standing between you and getting started.

What PREVAIL Requires From Every Volunteer

A few requirements apply no matter which track you choose. You need to be 18 or older, able to lift 15 to 25 pounds, and willing to complete a background check through LiveScan fingerprinting.
