April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). Sexual violence is any sexual activity where consent is not obtained or not freely given. It impacts every community and affects people of all genders, sexual orientations, and ages. The perpetrator of sexual violence is usually someone the victim knows, such as a friend, current or former intimate partner, coworker, neighbor, or family member. It can occur in person or through technology, such as posting or sharing sexual pictures of someone without their consent, or non-consensual sexting. The National theme of this year’s campaign is:  Drawing Connections: Prevention Demands Equity. This year, we are asking the community to help us raise awareness in two ways: Join Teal Day on April 4th Wear teal, the color of sexual violence prevention.  Weather it’s a ribbon, shirt, or accessory, show your support by sharing your teal look and tag PREVAIL on your social media. November is Homeless and Runaway Youth Awareness Month

November is Homeless and Runaway Youth Awareness Month (HYAM). Help raise awareness about youth homelessness.

Homeless and runaway youth are deeply in need of resources and opportunities but do not always have access to those resources.

1 in 10 young adults ages 18-25, and at least 1 in 30 adolescents ages 13-17, experience some form of homelessness over the course of a year. It is estimated that, nationwide, there are over 4,000 youth experiencing homeless every night; coming from every life circumstance and sharing an experience of home environments that are unsafe and unhealthy.

To make a positive impact, families and communities must understand the dynamics and challenges that contribute to youth homelessness and secure access to opportunities and resources that could lead youth to safe, healthy, and stable pathways.

Either family members or introduced by friends there is a level of trust in who that person is. The person gets them to believe that no one cares for them like they will, or uses threats that the minor finds viable.

Sexual Assault, a Pervasive Issue

As this new year quickly unfolds, the month of April brings into focus a form of violence that continues to rip apart the lives of children, individuals, and families across the world: sexual assault. Many people find this topic uncomfortable to talk about, but it is within this silence that allows this pervasive issue to continue wreaking havoc in our homes and communities. Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) provides an opportunity to educate our communities on this epidemic and invite them to play an active role in the ongoing prevention efforts to keep ourselves, our families, and our communities safe.
