Teal, Blue, and the Power of Truth: Protecting Our Future
This April, as the spring air settles over San Joaquin County, you might notice a deliberate shift in the colors surrounding us. From the teal ribbons representing Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) to the blue ribbons honoring Child Abuse Prevention Month, these hues are more than just symbols—they are a promise.
At PREVAIL, we believe that healing begins when we stop whispering and start speaking the truth with compassion. Our story is woven from two powerful threads of history: the 1969 Family and Youth Services legacy of protecting our children and the 1976 Women’s Center legacy of standing with survivors of violence. With over 55 years of combined experience, we have learned that we cannot just respond to a crisis after it happens; we must reach out a hand to prevent it from ever starting.
The Teal Takeover: Why We Fill the Cracks
If you walk through our community on April, you may see something that stops you in your tracks: vibrant teal sand being poured into the cracks of our local sidewalks. This is the Teal Sand Project, and its meaning is deeply personal.
Too often, survivors of sexual violence feel as though they are "falling through the cracks" of a world that is moving too fast to notice their pain. By filling those gaps with color, we are making a visual vow: We see you. We will not let you be overlooked. Prevention is about more than just safety; it is about reclaiming the narrative:
- Consent is a Conversation: We are moving the dialogue beyond "no means no" toward a world of enthusiastic, informed, and ongoing respect.
- The Power of Three Words: For anyone carrying the weight of a secret, the most healing thing they can hear is: “I believe you.” Validation is the first step toward restoration.
- Safe Spaces in a Digital World: We are working to protect our youth from exploitation by teaching them how to navigate the internet with confidence and how to recognize when a "connection" doesn't feel right.
Our Blue Ribbon Legacy: A 55-Year Promise
While teal represents our response to sexual violence, blue reminds us of where we began. Our history in child advocacy started in 1969, and today, that commitment is the heartbeat of PREVAIL.
Protecting our children isn't just about intervention; it is about wrapping a community of support around families. Through our advocacy and youth outreach, we work to strengthen the bond between parents and children, ensuring every child in San Joaquin County has a safe, soft place to land. We believe that by protecting a child’s peace today, we are securing the community’s peace tomorrow.
Denim Day: Standing Together, No Matter What
On April 29th, the PREVAIL team—joined by partners like General Hospital and the Office of Education—will wear denim. This global movement was born from a place of injustice in 1992, when an Italian court suggested a survivor’s choice of clothing implied consent because her jeans were "too tight."
We wear our jeans to say: There is no excuse. Your clothes are never a contract. We invite you to join us in this protest. Whether you wear your favorite pair of jeans to work or pick up one of our "Ask me why I'm wearing jeans" T-shirts, you are helping fund 24/7 restoration services—like our Sexual Assault Response Team (SART)—that ensure no one has to navigate the aftermath of trauma alone.

- Share the Resources: Stop by our Monthly Food Drive on April 18 (arrive by 9:00 AM for a number) to see "neighbors helping neighbors" in action. Please note: this is our final drive before our June/July hiatus!
At PREVAIL, we believe that by spreading the truth with love, we turn fear into action and vulnerability into strength. For over five decades, we have been a sanctuary for the weary and a bridge to a better life. This April, let’s walk that bridge together.
Hope has a home. Restoration is possible. We shall prevail.
